822892-1
Apple 'S.a.a. Zimmerman'

This reliable selection from 1982 yields large fruits with few seeds. New York dessert apple grower G.A. Zimmerman introduced this top variety to the market. Use another variety as a pollinator.

Fortunately, this fruit tree, which is quite hardy in our climate and originates from North America and Canada, is becoming increasingly known and popular. The taste of the elongated, yellow-green fruits is truly exotic, resembling banana, mango, and pineapple, and they are packed with vitamins. They are so healthy that there are serious indications of cancer prevention. At least 2 plants are needed for cross-pollination. Young plants prefer shade and some extra winter protection, but later full sun is also fine, and they can handle a harsh winter. Ultimately, they reach a height of 2-5 m; pruning is recommended to prevent even taller growth! The tree's structure is slightly taller than it is wide, so in the long run, a tree circle of 3-4 meters is advisable. Maintain a minimum distance of 4 m between two trees. The first fruits can be expected after about 4 years, preceded in spring by strangely scented white flowers that turn reddish-brown. They do not appreciate sea wind, but they do value slightly acidic soil (on clay soil, ensure plenty of humus) and a layer of mulch. No diseases have been reported in our climate yet, but there is not much experience.

Names:
Latin: Asimina triloba
Dutch: Roomappel
Also known as: Pawpaw or Prairie banana
English: Indiana Banana / Poor Man's Banana
