The young shoots and blue-grey leaves are remarkably red. When the thick, white flower buds become visible, the contrast with the purplish-red flower stalk is greatest. When they open, we see a beautiful white flower. It seems as if a wax layer has been sprayed over it to keep the whole in this pristine state a little longer. The prominent light yellow stamens soon fall off. After flowering, this beauty disappears under highly interesting foliage that grows much taller. It is shield-shaped and has two deeply incised lobes.
Jeffersonia is a rare, slow-growing shade plant that, (believe it or not), is related to Berberis. The name is in honor of Thomas Jefferson, who was president of the US from 1801-1808. He was a passionate plant lover and botany interested him greatly. There are only two species of Jeffersonia: an American and an Asian species. The latter, J. dubia, is the rarest, while the other, J. diphylla, is the strongest growing. They prefer a humic, not too dry soil in the shade. Dig a deep planting hole and mix it with plenty of leaf mould. In this, they can easily last for decades.
A detailed germination method can be found here: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25319374/

Names:
Latin: Jeffersonia diphylla
Dutch: Jeffersonia
English: Twinleaf
