406570-1
Potatoes 'UACH 918'

Occasionally, we test varieties from Gene Banks. This variety comes from Chile: UACh = Universidad Austral de Chile, and is attractive enough to be propagated on a small scale. The egg-shaped tubers have a pink skin with white flesh. After cooking, this variety proved to have a somewhat firm texture (I call it fine-grained) with a subtle, mild aroma. The large yield is remarkable!
WE SUPPLY SPECIAL VARIETIES LIKE THIS IN MIXED SEED SIZES; THERE MAY BE (VERY) LARGE TUBERS AMONG THEM. PLANT THESE WHOLE OR CUT THEM INTO PIECES WITH SPROUTS.

MID-EARLY VARIETY FOR CONNOISSEURS.
A mid-early variety means it can be harvested from August. Harvesting can be brought forward by a few weeks by planting earlier. Planting time is from mid-April, when the soil is warm enough. Pre-sprouting in light or in a large pot can be done earlier. Do not place them in a too-wet spot, but in full sun. Mid-early varieties can suffer from the dreaded potato blight (Phytophthora infestans). Some preventive measures include: spacing plants widely, fertilizing with patentkali, not spraying water over the plant, and possibly organic spraying with sulfur or silinal. The average planting distance is 70x40 cm; we recommend 80x40 cm to prevent diseases.

Denominations:
Latin: Solanum tuberosum
Dutch: Aardappel
English: Potato
