296840
Tomatillo 'Queen of Malinalco'

This unique Tomatillo comes from the Mexican town of Malinalco, about 100 km southwest of Mexico City. Elongated, tapered fruits ripen to bright yellow and are much sweeter than most Tomatillos, with a flavor somewhere between a Tomatillo and the sweeter, more tropical notes of a cherry. Eat them fresh, but they are also excellent grilled and diced or pureed for a fruitier version of salsa verde.

A nice, trouble-free crop, originally well-known in Mexican cuisine. Suitable for all kinds of stir-fries. Cultivation is easy: sow indoors early (March) and plant out at the end of May in a sheltered spot. The plants grow to 1-1.5 m high and like some support; the yield is about 30-40 fruits per plant. There is no risk of disease. Harvesting can be expected from September until the frost sets in. You should always grow this annual plant in at least pairs for pollination.

Names:
Latin: Physalis ixocarpa, or also P. philadelphica
Dutch: Tomatillo
Also: Ba-Toto
English: Husk Tomato
