293430
Medium Tomato 'Indigo Rose'

The first true purple tomato, with the same antioxidants as blueberries! Without the use of genetic modification, but after years of traditional cross-breeding and selection, Jim Myers of Oregon State University succeeded! Since 1960, this professor and his students have been perfecting a purple-skinned tomato. Mouse trials have already shown that anthocyanins (the antioxidants that cause the purple colour) are very healthy. That bodes well... The taste is simply that of a tomato: a good balance between sweet and sour. The fruits grow to the size of a golf ball (40-60 g) and are ripe when the purple skin changes from somewhat dull to shiny. The green "bottom" then turns red. The sun helps build up the purple colour; post-ripening and thus colour enhancement may be necessary. According to some sources, the flesh also changes from red to purple, but we only saw a red interior. The plants usually remain healthy and are not too tall: 100 cm, so some support is sufficient.

This group of tomatoes is intermediate in size between cherry tomatoes and beefsteak tomatoes: medium-sized, in other words. Each has its own unique character. The climbing varieties ripen somewhat later than the compact varieties and are therefore more successful under rain protection: a lean-to, greenhouse, or growing tunnel.

Denominations:
Latin: Lycopersicon lycopersicum, or also L. esculentum
Dutch: Medium-sized Tomato 'Indigo Rose'
Also: Purple tomato
English: Tomato, medium size
