Since 2008, we have been experimenting with this unknown vegetable, which has been known in Scandinavia for some time: in Sweden, this plant was cultivated on a slightly larger scale (for ornamental purposes) as early as 1870 and later discovered as an edible plant. The plant is now known in Sweden as rankspenat. Rankspinazie (vine spinach) is a perennial, very hardy climbing plant originally from the Caucasus. In winter, the plant retreats into root tubers to sprout again in early spring. These shoots are extra tender and can be harvested until June from older plants, after which the plant should be allowed to grow: they can reach up to three meters high! The plant is propagated by seeds or division; cuttings are very difficult. The plant can tolerate sun (with a mulch layer) but naturally grows in the shade, provided it has good drainage.
