A much sought-after vegetable for Indonesian and Surinamese cuisine. The perennial plant yields pleasantly sweet, fleshy, elongated fruits. Overwinter them in a heated greenhouse or as a potted plant indoors. The young leaves are a delicacy, and the male flower clusters are also eaten (stir-fry briefly). In summer, they thrive outdoors as a container plant in a large pot. Even as a foliage plant, it's remarkably beautiful, and fruit can appear from the 2nd year.
