AVAILABLE AT LEAST ONCE A YEAR. (1942) What immediately stands out is its dark red colour, irregular shape, and deep-set seeds. This last characteristic gives it the nickname "Raspberry Strawberry". The taste of this mid-early, historic variety also has a historic flavour: a little sweet, a little wild, and very aromatic!
Charles Machiroux (Aywaille, 7 July 1880 - Liège, 19 March 1947) lived in Amay (near Liège). He became a gardener for the Countess of Hemricourt at Chateau de Magnery in Engis. On 19 March 1910, Charles started as an independent gardener in Amay. Due to the cold spring of 1942, the late and early strawberry varieties in his garden ('Les Vignes à Wéhairon') in Amay bloomed at the same time. A natural cross occurred between the varieties 'Ville de Paris' (= 'Merveille de Tihange') x 'Tardive de Leopold'. The seeds of the fruits were saved, sown, and the best plants were selected, through which Charles Machiroux created an entirely new strawberry variety. After the breeder's death, the strawberry was named 'Souvenir de Charles Machiroux' as a tribute. To this day, this variety is still cultivated, especially in the regions of Amay, Tihange, Liège, and Vottem, but also beyond and even in France. This productive, relatively healthy, and delicious variety still steals the hearts of many enthusiasts. (Thanks to Mr. R. Machiroux, nephew of Charles, for preserving this valuable information, source: les Cimetieres)
Modern varieties such as 'Hapil' still gladly carry the characteristics of this old one! (bnkk)
Our strawberry collection partly consists of rare old varieties, which are only sporadically available. Therefore, the waiting time can be long. Annually in July, our grower pots a new crop, which is delivered in August-September. In April-May, we can replenish part of this assortment. Please note that there may be postage costs for any subsequent deliveries.
