This peach has been growing in China for centuries and was introduced to the US in 1871. Since then, clever growers have improved it into extra high-yielding varieties, and it is now offered worldwide as "wild peach," but the type is just as cultivated as the round variety... Wild peaches are sweeter than many round varieties and the skin peels off easily. The trees are very winter-hardy, although some protection in the first year during severe frost is advisable. 'Saturne' is self-pollinating, resistant to leaf curl, and remains quite compact.
