A very hardy and elegant shrub, blooming early in spring with clusters of pure white flowers, very useful for bees! After flowering, the clusters develop large, steel-blue berries that ripen in July. These are sweet and sour and very healthy, delicious in a dessert or processed into juice or jam... 'Smoky' is a 1928 selection from Beaverlodge, Alberta, Canada. The variety was introduced in 1952 and produces abundant fruit. The plants are self-pollinating, but another variety (e.g., 822607 'Krasnojarskaja' or 822608 'Northline') nearby will yield an even better harvest.
