The blueberry-like fruits of this shrub-like honeysuckle relative have a pleasant, sweet taste (with a slight tartness) and are eaten fresh (in a dessert, for example) and (for centuries) processed into jam, juice, sauce or compote: very healthy! The berry is elongated and frosted blue. The over 1.5 m high shrub grows best in the sun (to some shade) in almost any moisture-retaining soil and is not very susceptible to disease.
The (Russian) cultivar ‘Wojtek’ yields a reliable harvest of medium-sized fruits on rather large plants. They ripen quite early: around the first week of June. Plant this together with another cultivar because cross-pollination gives the best fruit set.
