The blueberry-like fruits of this shrub-like relative of the honeysuckle have a pleasant, sweet taste (with a slight tartness) and are eaten fresh (in a dessert, for example) and (for centuries) processed into jam, juice, compote or sauce: very healthy! The berry is elongated and frosted blue. The shrub, which grows to over 1.5 m tall, thrives best in sun (to slight shade) in almost any moisture-retaining soil and is not very susceptible to disease.
The ‘Boreal Beauty’ cultivar produces extra large, oval or heart-shaped blue honeyberries, which you harvest in June-July (after the early cultivars). Plant this together with another late-flowering cultivar, as cross-pollination gives the best fruit set.
