Both 'Gustav's Zellernuss' and the Italian variety (from Piedmont) 'Tonda Gentille Delle Langhe' do not grow too quickly (light pruning is sufficient) and yield a good harvest of fairly large hazelnuts early (beginning of September). We usually only have 1 of these 2 similar varieties in stock. Plant at least 2 different varieties for good pollination. Hazelnuts prefer moist, but airy soil.
Hazelnut bushes produce hazelnuts, a well-known and healthy nut, often associated with chocolate! The ripe nuts fall from the bush naturally (in September), so collect them regularly. Hazelnut bushes grow into large shrubs, which can be kept open with some pruning. Give the bushes a space of 2-3 m apart. Both male and female inflorescences grow on one plant; they are wind-pollinated. Self-pollination is unfavorable, so cross-pollination is necessary.
