It's a wonder this plant isn't more widely known! It's easy to cultivate, its white flowers (in autumn) are elegant, and its slowly ripening fruits (taking a year) create a beautiful combination of blooms and fruit. The taste is tropical and pleasantly unique, though eating too many consecutively is not recommended due to possible stomach fermentation. First grow it in a pot, then plant it in a greenhouse or in a not-too-wet spot in the garden. The small tree is reasonably winter-hardy, down to -16°C. Growth in Northern Europe is rather slow: up to 2 meters in 5 years, topping out at 3 meters, except in very sheltered locations. In subtropical areas with sufficient moisture, the tree can grow up to a maximum of 10 meters in height.
