Mycorrhizal fungi are indispensable for trees and plants. A mycorrhiza is a collaboration between plants and fungi from which both partners benefit: the host plants send the necessary carbon to the fungi, and in return, the fungi help bring vital water and nutrients to the roots. This collaboration significantly increases the nutritional value of crops and makes them more resilient to drought, diseases, and insect infestations. Fungi are indispensable for the soil. They improve soil structure, sequester carbon, and ensure that more water can be retained. They are even capable of breaking down pollution. This book demonstrates the key role mycorrhizal fungi play in the soil, both in agriculture and horticulture, as well as in forestry and floriculture. They can even play an important role in hydroponics. Mycorrhizal fungi can make the use of pesticides, the addition of nitrogen and phosphate compounds, and soil cultivation unnecessary.
