This wonderful jungle plant from the Philippines is valued for its enormous and very graceful leaves! A little sun is fine, but it needs plenty of moisture and, if possible, regular misting. The white, arum-like flowers are beautiful, though less unique than the leaves, and are followed (after pollination) by fruits with orange-red berries. In good summers, the entire plant can reach 3 meters in height and circumference here; the beautiful veins and upright growth habit are very striking in this species. (Usually, the leaves of this family are at an angle to the stem.) The plant is not frost-hardy, so the tubers must overwinter in a cool, frost-free place.
Like many species in this plant family, both the tubers and the stem are edible after cooking (!). The young leaves are used to wrap (rice) dishes.
