Until the beginning of the 20th century, oats were widely cultivated in Zeeland, mainly as horse feed, as horses still played an important role in general transport and agriculture. Fortunately, those oats from back then have been preserved, and Zeeland Oats are still specially cultivated for local beer, bread, muesli, and oatmeal. The cultivation of Zeeland Oats contributes to the preservation of genetic and agricultural diversity! These old oats are robust and adapted to cultivation in clay and sandy soils. The taste is better, with more aroma, less starch, and more fiber.
