A fruit tree that has been cultivated for centuries! Not least because plants grown from seed produce excellent fruiting trees. The raspberry-like fruits are delicious in desserts or jam. The tree is best known as the host of the silkworm. The large serrated and (later) palmate leaves emerge late in spring, and flowering is also late, so there is no frost damage. Both male and female flowers grow on one tree and can pollinate each other (fertile = self-compatible = 1 plant is enough for fruit set). Through pruning, the plant can be grown as a BONSAI, shrub, standard tree, or espalier (e.g., candelabra or parasol). Difference between white and black mulberry: white has grey-green, hairy twigs; black has yellow-green, hairless twigs. Very hardy!
