Sometimes you wonder why a plant isn't much more well-known! Take this wonderful, hardy shrub: its leaves are glossy green, like the cherry laurel, and from June into autumn it produces exotic blooms: reddish-brown, shaped like a magnolia or protea... The scent of the flowers is fantastic: sweet like cinnamon or melons, a fragrance also released when cutting young twigs. The older branches can be peeled for a very good cinnamon substitute. The shrub grows slowly and blooms most profusely in a sunny spot. Its final height is over 2 m, but pruning is possible. Give it rich, moisture-retaining soil: a true asset! This unique shrub, originating from North America, has been cultivated in Europe since 1726.
