Formosan Jack-in-the-Pulpit

First, fresh green leaves grow on long stems. The leaf is divided from the center into (usually) 10 parts and forms an umbrella shape around the stem. For this alone, the plant deserves a spot in your garden!
Arisaema formosanum is a very variable genus, most of which occur in Taiwan. It is striking that all species can change sex: when the plants are young, they are male, but as they get older, they often become female. The flowers are also special due to their deep color combination: deep purple striped and with a long thread-like outgrowth on the spathe. The plants grow and bloom where other plants fail, namely in the shade. Give them a spot with plenty of humus and protect the corms from frost with extra leaf litter.
