That pleasant bitterness, which true broad bean lovers adore, caused by tannin, this little bean harbours and makes it a true flavour bomb!
Due to its very good frost resistance, you can actually sow the beans throughout the winter, unless we have the "misfortune" of severe frost...
In addition to consumption, field beans are widely cultivated as green manure, as they can fix nitrogen in the soil.
Farmers use the dried and then ground beans as very protein-rich feed for cows. Around 1990, the cultivation of field beans as a protein-rich crop almost completely disappeared. However, there is renewed interest in this crop in the context of greening and as a cultivation of local animal feed, replacing soybeans.
Field beans were first cultivated in Central Asia: Iraq and Iran, presumably in the Bronze Age. The beans have been cultivated in North-West Europe for a few thousand years. Only in the Middle Ages did the large-seeded broad beans emerge.
1 kg is for 75 m²

Names:
Latin: Vicia faba
Dutch: Veldbonen
Also known as: Duivenbonen, Waalse Bonen, Wierbonen, Paardenbonen
English: Broad beans
