The dark red seeds are used as a dye (annatto) for cheese, butter, and textiles. South America is the origin of this plant; the Spanish also planted it in the Philippines. The ancient Incas made a (blood-red) religious drink from it. The evergreen plant has fairly large, heart-shaped leaves and flowers at a young age with pink blossoms (resembling apple blossoms). Bring this tropical plant indoors during winter.
