Large Onions 'Radar' / (Zwijndrechtse Poot)

Radar can be grown from sets for autumn planting, but is also very suitable for the traditional cultivation method, as was common for the 'Zwijndrechtse Poot' variety. For this latter method, sow in a seedbed in August and protect with fleece during winter, or (at the latest) in September under glass (in a greenhouse or cold frame) and overwinter there. In spring, transplant at approximately 10 cm apart. The result is an early harvest of wonderfully tender onions.

Sowing method: (normal cultivation) sow indoors from March and plant out as seedlings, or sow in rows (improved with potting soil) from mid-April. (planting onion cultivation) sow closely together in April-May, harvest the young onions by July at the latest, let the foliage die back, and plant again in the autumn for harvest the following year. (seed onion cultivation) traditional cultivation, widely used around Zwijndrecht: sow in August, overwinter the young plants under glass, and plant out in spring. Final growing distance: 10 cm.
