The vigorously growing plants produce dark pink, heart-shaped fruits, weighing 200-400g and having an excellent, balanced taste.
Origin: '1884 Strawberry Wedge' was discovered in 1994 by Darrell Merrell from Tulsa, Oklahoma, while he was growing '1884' tomato plants. According to Tatiana's TomatoBase, some plants were different and produced strawberry-shaped fruits instead of the expected Beefsteak. It is possible that a few stray seeds of a known heart-shaped variety were accidentally mixed in. This tasty tomato was first offered in the Seed Savers 1997 Yearbook by Darrell Merrell.
This group of tomatoes are of a size between cherry tomato and beefsteak tomato: medium-sized, therefore. Each has a unique character. The climbing varieties ripen somewhat later than the compact varieties and are therefore more successful under rain protection: a lean-to, greenhouse, or growing tunnel.
