Cherry Tomato 'Gardener's Delight'

  • Product number: 291200
  • Origin: Central America
  • Latin: Lycopersicon lycopersicum, or also L. esculentum

Call it a large cherry tomato or a small tomato, it's right in between. Provides a large harvest of tasty fruits. Good for growing the recently popular "tomatoes on the vine".
Do you often grow your tomatoes in the same spot, for example in a greenhouse? Then soil-borne diseases can develop, against which rootstocks are resistant, and grafting is therefore recommended:
for grafting tomatoes, use this variety: 291110 Tomato 'Landon'. As an aid, we recommend these grafting clips: 847520 Grafting clip 1.5 mm.

The smallest tomatoes in our assortment are called cherry tomatoes or ping-pong tomatoes, depending on their size. Some varieties are elongated or heart-shaped and are given a slightly different name accordingly. Some are even original, wild species. Most taste extra sweet, a few have a sweet and sour taste. Cherry tomatoes are closest to the original species, perhaps that is why they are generally more resistant to the dreaded potato blight.

Names:
Latin: Lycopersicon lycopersicum, or also L. esculentum
Dutch: Pingpongtomaat
Also known as: Kerstomaat (Cherry tomato)
English: Cherry Tomato

Sowing method: March-May indoors. Transplant to pots when 5 cm tall. Provide plenty of light and, from April, harden off outdoors in good weather. Do not plant out before the end of May. Tomato plants use a lot of water. For this taller or (in the greenhouse) climbing type, side shoots (suckers) must be removed regularly. Planting distance 60-80 cm.

Customer review: Last season (2008) I tried the "Gardener's Delight" tomato and it was amazing! It grew very tall (over 180 cm), but the taste, mmm, old-fashioned, sweet, firm, juicy. I let many people taste it and everyone agreed, it was the most delicious small tomato they had ever tasted. The size varied greatly; most were cherry tomato size (2-3 cm), but there were also very tiny ones (1 cm) and a few really large ones (4 cm). The plant remained narrow, 60-70 cm wide; there was enough space to plant one. I had them in pots, in the greenhouse. Furthermore, it was easy to grow, with a good germination rate (100%). I had received 7 seeds and also got 7 plants. Because I wanted to test them thoroughly, I grew all the plants. There was a lot of variation in the yield produced by each plant, but then again, I had grown all 7 seeds, and normally you would select the best ones.
