The Bhut Jolokia Pepper, also known as the Ghost Pepper, originates from Northeast India and is likely one of the hottest peppers ever measured on the Scoville scale. In 2005, a Bhut Jolokia Pepper (measured at the New Mexico State University Chile Pepper Institute) scored 1,001,304 SHU on the Scoville scale! For comparison, a very hot Tabasco sauce measures 2,500-5,000 SHU, and one of the hottest other peppers in our assortment, the Tépin, measures 265,000 SHU. Besides the (painful) consumption of this hot Jolokia, many other applications are known in NE India: spiritual and medicinal. The most interesting application even saves lives: people smear their windows with it as scent bombs to deter visits from wild elephants! Finally, a warning: wear glasses and gloves when cutting and preparing, be careful with consumption, only experienced pepper-eaters can tolerate them, and... keep children at a distance!
