This special variety comes from the US, bred by Outstanding Seed Company, and is less flat than most pattypan squash. Nicely thick and white to butter-yellow with orange stripes. Many fruits have slight warts. Fully ripened, they are 18-20 cm in diameter and 10-15 cm high. The plants are "semi-bush" with a few short vines, and their resistance to powdery mildew is quite good.
Pattypan is the French name for a flat, ornamental fruit, which strongly resembles a flying saucer. The fruit is closely related to zucchini and is also very similar in taste. The intention is to harvest them (for consumption) young to very young, when the skin still feels "prickly". It's a real luxury to harvest them so young that the flower is still attached... Fried whole in oil, they make a beautiful dish! To preserve the fruit for display, you must let it ripen on the (compact) plant. Enjoy this beauty!
