This is one of the oldest Dutch varieties of this beautiful historical vegetable. The sweet, white root has been cultivated for centuries and is easily distinguishable from white carrots by its celery-like leaves. A special feature is the frost resistance of the tubers; the flavour is enhanced after they have been exposed to frost. The seeds of 'Holkruin' have a wonderfully spicy fragrance.
Sweet, white root, cultivated for centuries. Parsnip remains have been found in Switzerland and southern Germany during excavations dating back to the Stone Age (9000 BC and later). Parsnips became truly popular as a cultivated crop around the turn of the millennium in Roman Italy. They are quite frost-resistant, and the flavour is enhanced after they have been exposed to frost. Please note: in warm and sunny weather, the leaves can cause irritation when harvesting.
