This North American plant is highly valued for its protein-rich, lentil-like seeds, which can be shaken from the unique thick bundles of pods. With its neutral taste, it's a contender for hummus (deliciously seasoned with herbs and garlic) or extra tasty as a roasted and slightly salted snack.
The plants are graceful and look very exotic with their mimosa-like, feathered leaves and white flower balls! Yet, this 120 cm high plant is very hardy. Give it a spot in the sun or partial shade, and it will prove its loyalty for years. A small meal from a beautiful garden plant every year! The neighboring plants also benefit from the nitrogen-fixing ability of its roots. Native Americans knew the secret of the root bark: it contains a strong hallucinogenic substance (DMT) for making prairiehuasca (together with Peganum harmala)!
