Absolutely a top choice for the conscious vegetable gardener! The combination of extreme cold resistance and a dark purple to black color (packed with antioxidants) is rarely seen in corn that also ripens well in our climate. Produces slender ears 20 to 25 cm long.
Because it's a flour corn, you don't have to stress about the exact harvest time like with sweet corn; you simply let the ears dry on the plant until the kernels are rock hard.
Another small advantage for the Dutch garden: due to their relatively limited height (1.5 to 1.8 m), they catch less wind than gigantic commercial varieties, making them perfect for a sheltered spot or even a large container. Ideal for making nutritious flour, tortillas, and cornbread.
