Due to its healthy growth, this Australian wild plant is often used as a rootstock or for grafting Eggplants. Be sure to let some plants grow into magnificent ornamental plants that can last for years in containers. With regular pruning, plants of 1-2 m will develop annually, featuring beautifully incised (palmate) leaves and countless violet-blue flowers with an orange-yellow heart. Eventually, graceful clusters of 2 cm fruits will grow from these, which can be eaten both raw and fried, but be careful: they are poisonous when unripe! Wait to harvest until they are (orange-)red, soft, and practically fall off the plant. The taste is remarkably sweet, sometimes with a hint of bitterness. The same plant can exhibit taste variations from year to year.
