This is a relatively unknown vegetable that grows wild in Japan, where it is called Gagaimo. The young leaves can be eaten raw or cooked, as can the young fruits, raw or pickled. The thickened root can be cooked like potatoes. Many medicinal properties have also been described. The plant grows quickly and is a climber. The light lilac flowers, growing in clusters, are beautiful: completely filled with sticky hairs. With some protection, the plant will overwinter; other sources state that it can even tolerate a lot of frost.
