A special fruit from Vietnam, perennial in the tropics, immediately striking with its beautiful blossoms, followed by bright, orange-red fruits. This color is due to the rich content of beta-carotene and lycopene. Since both female and male plants develop, it is best to grow 4 or 5 plants together to ensure fruit set.
Usually, the fruits are round or elongated, about 13x10 cm, covered with small spines. As they ripen, they gradually change color from green to yellow, orange, and finally red. Wait until the fruits become soft; they are at their best then, although in India, they are also cooked or stir-fried unripe as a vegetable.
The taste is mild with a hint of bitterness and firm, yellow flesh, inside are edible seeds in a bright red (edible) aril. This red aril is traditionally used to color sticky rice red (cooked with it).
The young leaves are blanched and eaten as a snack with chili sauce, or simply cooked in soup. Since the plant is perennial, you can overwinter them in large pots frost-free or provide a substantial winter cover in the garden.
It is not surprising that the fruit is widely used in traditional medicine, as it contains many healthy components, in addition to beta-carotene and lycopene, we mention: a high concentration of linoleic acid (omega-6) and omega-3 fatty acids.
