This pod, cultivated in Sweden (Dalarna province) since 1940 and adapted there, has gigantic dimensions and is remarkably tender and sweet! The pods can grow up to 3 cm wide and 15-20 cm long on plants that reach 3 m in height. The bicoloured blossoms, which precede fruiting, are a beautiful violet with brownish-purple. The ripe seeds are recognizable by their grey-green colour with black dots.
A bit of history: around 1940, Alida and Efraim Andersson received seeds of this giant pea from a locomotive engineer, Birger Wilhelm Bergfält, in Ludvika. When Alida and Efraim moved around 1975, they wanted to preserve the pods and gave them to gardener Olle Ridelius in Vassbo. He, in turn, gave them to the Sesame association. How the engineer, who lived between 1890 and 1945, obtained the seeds is difficult to say, but various types of giant sugar peas have existed since the 19th century.
