Underestimated for centuries but now finally (permanently?) on the map! This dune pioneer actually grows on all types of soil, but naturally prefers calcareous soil. Plant a row of 3-5 shrubs, as both male and female plants are needed to pollinate each other (by wind). (Both male and female plants will grow from the seeds, but unfortunately you won't know which ones they are...) After the inconspicuous flowering, orange-yellow, cream, or coral-red berries develop (covering the branches). Both the leaves and, especially, the berries are very healthy and contain many more vitamins than citrus fruits like oranges! Make juice, elixir, or jam from them; do not pick them too ripe due to alcohol formation.
