This tropical bean is also called Jackbean (after the fairy tale Jack and the Beanstalk) and is especially well-known in Brazil. The pure white seeds have an elongated, grey-black hilum, which is characteristic of this genus. First, there is an enormous growth spurt of the beautiful, fast-growing climbing plant, and in late summer, the wonderful lilac flowers give rise to huge pods 25-30 cm long and 2 cm wide. These can be harvested young and eaten pod and all; when riper or fully ripe, you eat the seeds. Make sure to cook them for a while, as you would with dried beans. In a heated greenhouse, the plant can overwinter, so growing it in a large container will provide years of enjoyment!
