Broad Bean 'Corretje de Kikker'

  • Product number: 049910
  • Origin: Mediterranean Region
  • Latin: Broad bean

An old bean that our grower has been cultivating since ± 2000, having received it from an old man in Heerjansdam. He and his father probably cultivated this broad bean from the 1920s. Our grower keeps them short (pinching out on time) due to aphids, the yield is good (even now that he grows them in Sweden), and he picks them small "then you don't have to double pod them," but if left to grow further, they become old-fashioned large with an average of 5 beans in a pod. The broad beans cook white and can be stored well in the freezer, even after two years, provided they are vacuum-packed.
The old man's name was Cor, and he was known as Corretje de Kikker (Corrie the Frog) in the garden. He passed away around 2014 and was over 90 years old.

“Ik ben in de bonen” (literally: "I am in the beans") means: “I am confused”. According to the Groot Uitdrukkingenwoordenboek by Van Dale (2006), this idiom originates from an old superstition. In the past, people believed that broad beans emitted an intoxicating scent during their bloom, which could even lead to insanity if one fell asleep near them.
