This old variety was discovered in the Emmental in the 1940s after a severe hailstorm had destroyed all bean seeds. While searching for remaining seeds, this variety was found in a trough. A foster daughter had brought the beans from Richigen near Worb (canton Bern) years earlier.
The seeds are dark purple to almost black in color. It is a late variety that can grow up to 2.5 to 4 meters high. The fresh, very tasty, flat beans (mostly stringless!) have a short cooking time. Due to their special black color, they are also very suitable as dried beans, having a light aroma with a wonderfully soft texture.
Don't forget to enjoy the pinkish-red to lilac blossoms!
