A bean with a beautiful history!
The climbing plants bloom beautifully with lilac flowers, after which striking deep purple bean pods appear. This bean is especially prized for its beautiful seeds and rich flavor as a dry bean. In the past, it was even used to bake bread. Enjoy harvesting the deep purple to almost black beans.
As early as around 1650, the Lenape people (Native Americans) cultivated these beans around Kingsessing, at that time an important trading settlement at the end of the Great Minquas Path. The name is derived from the Lenape word Chingsessing, which loosely translated means: "the place of the meadow". Today, this area forms a district in southwest Philadelphia.
In our search for the most original beans, this old heritage variety is a valuable addition to our assortment.
