There are 2 types of gherkins (in appearance): smooth or spiny. This is the "spiny" gherkin, which provides an extra interesting mouthfeel. Of course, they are not sharp spines... to be honest: the original gherkins of yesteryear also had "spines"! Because no fertilization is needed for fruit set (parthenocarpy), this variety will continue to produce even under difficult conditions. Grow them climbing in the greenhouse or creeping in a (very) sheltered spot outdoors.
