Unrivalled! This is a very fine, old French endive variety that produces looser, wavy inner leaves that grow into a typical horn shape. The thick, buttery yellow leaves are very juicy and tasty; they have that special thick crunch of Italian endive, but with a sweeter flavour.
Like all chicory varieties, they are stronger than lettuce. This cut-and-come-again type for winter does well in a cold tunnel or frame. Good for a salad mix when harvested young, or in stir-fries or stews when harvested mature.
The chicory family includes endive, curly endive, and various types of chicory. Characteristic is the more or less present "bitterness", formerly detested and nowadays highly appreciated. Let a plant "bolt": chicory flowers are usually beautiful blue in colour and smell of vanilla!
