Beautiful glossy-leaved mint with pink flowers and, when gently bruised, the recognizable scent of the famous cologne from Cologne! Originally, this plant was also the source of the essential oil used for the well-known "4711". Nowadays, it is probably chemically recreated. A nostalgic scent, isn't it? Popular with livestock farmers: occasionally walk through the plant, and there will be far fewer flies!
Most mint species of the genus Mentha grow in the sun or in the shade. In the sun, the most compact growth and the most intense color, scent, and flavor develop. Each species goes through 2 growth stages: in spring, there is an upward growth spurt before flowering. After that, horizontally (rapidly) growing runners emerge, which develop into new plants in another location. Bees and butterflies love mint flowers.
