True Yerba Mate is related to holly and is the main ingredient for tea in South America. The plant grows in subtropical regions, so here it must overwinter in a cool, frost-free environment. Grow it in a large pot and harvest! Maté has been consumed for centuries by the South American Guarani (Paraguay). This tea is preferably drunk from round, tapered bowls (the 'mate') made, for example, from bottle gourds. After pouring, the tea is sipped through a special metal, filtered straw ('bombilla'). It is preferable to pass a bowl around; the host ('matero') drinks the first (bitterest) bowl, then after refilling, the next person drinks, and so on. Sometimes everyone has their own straw, but that is not according to tradition. Sharing Yerba Mate is therefore actually an intimate ritual.
