Djeroek Poeroet (Jeruk Purut) or Wild Lime is a small evergreen tree, native to Indonesia. They grow excellently in a (large) pot. The fragrant, aromatic leaves and the zest of the (bumpy) fruit are used in Asian cuisine. The leaves are typically divided into two and are glossy dark green. They have a fresh and fruity taste and are usually cooked, sometimes also stir-fried. Delicious for soups, sauces in chicken and meat dishes. Young leaves are the tastiest; older leaves should be de-veined. Stems and branches are armed with increasingly hard thorns (as they age). The plants must be brought indoors in the autumn, as they can only tolerate a single degree of frost. The plant has no dormant period, so it should be kept moist and warm throughout the winter. Give them sufficient nutrition (see our Peters Professional Soluble Fertilizer) and prune them to an acceptable size.
