A fruit tree that has been cultivated for centuries! The raspberry-like fruits are delicious in desserts or jam. We best know the tree as host to the silkworm. The large serrated and (later) palmate leaves emerge late in spring, and it also blooms late, so there's no risk of frost damage. Both male and female flowers appear on one tree, which can pollinate each other (fertile = self-compatible = one plant is enough for fruit set). Through pruning, the plant can be grown as a BONSAI, shrub, standard tree, or espalier (e.g., candelabra or parasol). Difference between white and black mulberry: white has grey-green, hairy twigs; black has yellow-green, hairless twigs. Very winter-hardy!
OUR SEEDLINGS MAY PRODUCE A DIFFERENT (EDIBLE) MULBERRY. WE BUY THEM FOR THE NIGRA, BUT IMPURITIES OFTEN OCCUR.
