That's handy if you don't have a large garden but do love sour cherries: a bush cherry! This plant grows to about 2 meters tall and wide and yields a huge harvest of very dark red fruits.
This is the result of countless crosses between the Morel (Sour Cherry) and the Steppe Cherry (Dwarf Cherry), started in the 1940s by the Canadian Dr. Les Kerr and continued by the University of Saskatchewan. It wasn't until 1999 that 'Carmine Jewel' was ready, and it then took at least another 10 years before enough were cultivated for the global market. The plants are very hardy and can be used both for processing into juices and jam, and for eating raw. You do have to like a "sour kick" (like me), as the fruits are packed with flavor and antioxidants.
