Asparagus was very popular with the Romans, who cultivated the species. This old variety from France closely resembles the varieties from Roman times; they produce green or blanched asparagus (depending on the cultivation method) with a purple hue. Grow twice the number of plants you need, and after a few years, remove the female plants (pistil and berries). The remaining male plants will yield harvests for 20 years! Female plants, by the way, produce thinner asparagus, which are highly prized culinarily today as "wild asparagus."
Tip: for growing blanched (white) asparagus, asparagus foil is very useful! See 845005
