Potatoes 'Blue Eyes'

  • Product number: 407172.1
  • Origin: Andes, South America
  • Latin: Solanum phureja

(2016) Parents: Sungold x Purean Dream (?) Breeder: Stefan Griesser.
Beautiful, fairly round tubers with a bicolour of purple and light yellow. The flesh is light yellow.
Most of our potatoes are descended from Peruvian and South Chilean species (Solanum tuberosum). In the higher parts of the Andes, in Bolivia, Solanum phureja grows in a variety of cultivated forms, which have been cultivated there for centuries. Stefan has succeeded in developing varieties suitable for our climate. Highly sought after by curious and innovative chefs for their unique taste and colour! Cook them gently over low heat for about 8 minutes, then drain and let them steam in a closed pan.
The appearance of the plants: they grow quite broad, so give them space, bloom gracefully purple and bear typically narrow, wrinkled leaves.

SPECIAL VARIETIES LIKE THESE ARE DELIVERED IN A MIXED SEED SIZE, THERE MAY BE (VERY) LARGE TUBERS AMONG THEM. PLANT THESE WHOLE OR CUT THEM INTO PIECES WITH SPROUTS.

MAIN CROP VARIETY FOR GOURMETS.
A main crop variety means it can be harvested from September. Early planting can move the harvest forward by a few weeks. Planting time is from mid-April, when the soil is warm enough. Pre-sprouting in light or in a large pot can be done earlier. Do not plant them in a too wet spot, but in full sun. Main crop varieties can suffer from the dreaded potato blight (Phytophthora infestans). Some preventive measures include: planting widely, fertilizing with potash, not spraying water over the plant, and possibly organic spraying with sulfur or silinal. The average planting distance is 70x40 cm, we recommend 80x40 cm to prevent diseases.
