Spiral garlic 'Pennsylvania Dutch'

  • Product number: 306294.1
  • Origin: Central Asia
  • Latin: Allium sativum var. ophioscorodon subvar. porcelain

This is a garlic with a very strong flavour and a significant aftertaste! The name suggests that Dutch people in the US cultivated this, but we don't know for sure. Expect bulbs with 4-5 cloves and a normal harvest.

How tasty can also be beautiful... (or vice versa). This flavourful member of the garlic family grows with 1 or more curls in the stem and is (therefore) particularly decorative. Spiral garlic is called hardneck garlic in English and is generally stronger in flavour than the so-called softneck varieties.

Denominations:

Garlic can be planted year-round, provided the cloves are in good condition. Most varieties are in stock during autumn and winter. We supply varieties that are successfully cultivated in the Netherlands. Immediately after receiving, break open the bulb and plant the cloves in the ground: 2-5 cm deep and 10-20 cm apart. When planted in autumn, the garlic will emerge in February (or earlier), and can be harvested in June-July. Planting later, of course, means a later harvest. Harvesting is not obligatory; garlic is winter-hardy and can remain in the ground. After harvesting, braid the foliage as you sometimes see garlic in stores, and dry the bulbs in the sun. In a room, they can sometimes be stored for up to a year! Cultivation is not difficult, but you can find good tips in our cultivation description in PDF (see bottom of the website). Garlic is said to deter aphids in roses, for example – worth a try!
