Garlic 'Süd-est-Rouge

  • Product number: 306129.1
  • Origin: France
  • Latin: Allium sativum var. sativum

This robust and highly productive garlic originates from sunny southeastern France. ‘Süd-est-rouge’ excels in the vegetable garden: the plants grow vigorously and yield a generous harvest of large, well-filled bulbs. Beneath the outer skins lies a beautiful wreath of overlapping cloves with an enticing, soft pink to deep red glow.

The flavour is deliciously aromatic and refined: full-bodied, rich, and perfect for Mediterranean dishes. A major advantage of this variety is that you can beautifully braid the bulbs into a decorative garlic string for the kitchen after the summer harvest. Thanks to its excellent storage quality, you can enjoy your own top-quality garlic well into winter!

Packaging

Garlic can be planted all year round, provided the cloves are in good condition. Most varieties are available in autumn and winter. We supply varieties that are successfully grown in the Netherlands. Immediately after receipt, break open the bulb and plant the cloves in the ground: 2-5 cm deep and 10-20 cm apart. If planted in autumn, the garlic will emerge in February (or earlier) and can be harvested in June-July. Planted later naturally means a later harvest. Harvesting is not mandatory; garlic is hardy and can also simply remain in the ground. After harvesting, braid the foliage as you sometimes see garlic in stores and dry the bulbs in the sun. In a cool, dry place, they can sometimes be stored for up to a year! Cultivation is not difficult, but you can find good tips in our cultivation description in PDF (see bottom of the website). Garlic is said to deter aphids in, for example, roses, worth a try!
